FAPBM

The Foundation for Protected Areas and Biodiversity of Madagascar (FAPBM) is a trust fund that supports biodiversity conservation in Madagascar by sustainably financing the promotion, protection, and expansion of protected areas.

BCM has been supported by FAPBM since 2017, receiving substantial annual funding to enhance and consolidate various ongoing activities. FAPBM's support is primarily focused on three main areas:

  • Biodiversity Conservation: Prioritizing the control and monitoring of the protected area, the development and maintenance of firebreaks, and ecological restoration through the production of young plants, reforestation campaigns, and their follow-up and maintenance. This also includes improving knowledge about the site, raising environmental awareness, and providing environmental education.

  • Community Support and Developmen: Introducing new income-generating activities along with the necessary equipment, training, and community storage facilities.

  • Strengthening Administrative and Financial Management: Enhancing the administrative management of funding.

EFATSY

To support the preservation of vulnerable habitats, BCM also collaborates with GERP in their conservation efforts for the Efatsy Classified Forest, part of the Manombo forests located 30 km south of Farafangana in southeast Madagascar. Since 2022, BCM has contributed an annual fund of USD 10,000 to help protect this habitat, which frequently faces cyclones and significant threats such as illegal selective logging and charcoal production. Traditional traps and fire points are occasionally found but have been decreasing rapidly.

The core of this collaboration involves paying the salaries of 10 forest guards recruited from the local community to enhance surveillance and maintain the site's integrity. These are permanent jobs that comply with current labor laws.

SHARJAH

BCM has just finalized a collaboration with a privileged and new partner Sharjah Safari based in the United Arab Emirates, involved in species and habitat preservation projects all over the world, and both wishing to now combine efforts together in Madagascar. We consider this partnership as a certain form of an encouraging recognition of our commitment, which we proudly welcome.

BCM is therefore expanding its scope of intervention, the Befanjana site in the north-east of Madagascar has been identified for this purpose. Steps are underway to realize this project the same way as based on our approach and experiences acquired from our other project sites.

We will share the progress and details about the Befanjana project soon.

CONSERVATION INTERNATIONAL

BCM and Conservation International have partnered to strengthen the preservation of Andriantantely, a forest block  in the south of the Ankeniheny-Zahamena Corridor.

CONSERVATION ALLIES

Conservation Allies joined the BCM family of partners in 2024 to consolidate our surveillance activities, the organization of mixed brigades and in recruiting additionnal new patrollers.
