Recently published 'Madagascar Protected Area Outlook 2025' (https://conservationallies.org/outlook/) outlines the state of the country's protected areas. These range from Critically Endangered (all forest lost in the next 10 years), Endangered (...next 25 years), Vulnerable (...next 40 years), to Least Concern (stable but conservation dependent). Of Madagascar's 109 terrestrial protected areas, only 60 are considered Least Concern and these include BCM's Beanka Protected Area (17,166ha, western dry forest) and Sahafina (2414ha, eastern rainforest). Prior to BCM's creation and management of these two protected areas (from 2015 onwards), both had lost significant amounts of forest (around 30% each), but BCM has brought this down to near-zero. BCM's long term vision will be to ensure the integrity of these protected areas through the next decades and to apply the lessons learnt at other sites in Madagascar.
